Lullaby Lyrics
Nighttime is for sleeping
All around the world
Nighttime is for sleeping
For every boy and girl (x2)
The moon is in the sky
And the sun has gone to sleep
The clouds roll by
The stars their silent twinkling do they keep (x2)
So close your sleepy eyes
And rest your weary head
Upon the pillow soft like cloud
All cozy in your bed
So rest your weary head
And close your sleepy eyes
And sail away to dreamland now
Your dreams will bring a sweet surprise
Lyric Translation
None — Just to note it’s all repeated verses except the last switcheroo.
Where does this lullaby come from?
Ireland
Where did you learn this lullaby?
I’ve written lullabies for both of my children. This is the first one, written for my boy in Berkeley, CA in 2011. I’ve marked it as Ireland as we now live here and I associate it more with this place.
How did you learn/what inspired you to compose this lullaby?
I was inspired to write a song that explained, in calm and loving terms: IT IS NOW NIGHTTIME AND SLEEPING IS WHAT NIGHTTIME IS FOR. NIGHTTIME HAS BEEN FOR SLEEPING FOR LITERALLY OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS!
